Winnipeg, Jan 8 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Bert Doerksen, 80, of Winnipeg has been ordered to stand trial for the “mercy killing” of his 78-year-old wife Susan. According to today’s National Post, a pre-trial hearing found enough evidence to send the case to trial. Susan was found dead by carbon monoxide poisoning in the couple’s car.

Doerksen’s lawyer, Martin Glazer, called the incident a “mercy killing” comparing his client to George Herbert, a Winnipeg man, who was went to trial for killing his wife by bludgeoning her with the blunt end of an axe, after her consistent pleas for morphine. The National Post notes that in that case the jury exonerated Herbert after less that 30 minutes of deliberation.
