WESTMINSTER, May 26, 2004, (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Catholic bishops of England and Wales have issued a fifty-five page booklet, “Cherishing Life,” clarifying the Catholic position on a wide range of life and family issues; abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, cloning, eugenics, pre-natal diagnosis, gene therapy, artificial fertilization, medical ethics, the vocation of marriage, divorce, child abuse, single parent families, and even the ethics of war.  The authors not only touch solely on the moral issues of abortion, sterilization and euthanasia, they looked more deeply at the philosophical underpinnings of the abortion mentality, calling the recent utilitarian developments in medical ethics a “sinister form of injustice”. The bishops issue a warning that “the very ethos of the healthcare professions” have become corrupted by a type of ethics theory similar to that of Nazi Germany. “The Abortion Act 1967 has had a corrupting effect on British society as a whole and this has spread to the medical profession,” the document said. “We fear that there is a real danger that the same pattern may be developing in the treatment of the disabled and the elderly.”  The document points out the deceptive language used by promoters of “therapeutic” cloning. “(Cloning) is also euphemistically called ‘cell nuclear transfer’: a title which disguises the fact that the aim is to produce human embryos and then make use of them. Therapeutic cloning would be far worse than full pregnancy cloning as it would set up a system in which human embryos were cloned only to be destroyed so that their cells could be ‘harvested’.”“Cherishing Life” is presented as an effort to clarify common misapprehensions surrounding the relationship of Catholics to a democratic state. On the pro-life responsibilities of Catholic voters, the bishops said, “Account must be taken of (the candidate’s) attitude to the most vulnerable. We recommend that voters ask candidates about their voting intentions on a range of issues, giving priority to issues where innocent lives are at risk.”  In closing paragraphs the bishops call on Catholics to become active in political life saying that, although the life and family ethics issues are not the only ones to be considered, they are of the highest priority. Quoting an earlier document, the bishops point out, “The attitude of a candidate on that one issue may indicate a general philosophy or personal bias, for instance, contempt for those who uphold the sacredness of human life.”  To read the full document: https://217.19.224.165/frameset.htm   see LifeSiteNews.com’s Special Report indicating the connection between the population control and abortion movements and Nazi Eugenics at:  https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2004/may/040518a.html
