FRANKFURT, March 3, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Conservative Members of the European Parliament (MEP) urged the EU’s constitutional convention this weekend not to delay completing the text for the EU’s constitution based on international events unrelated to the decision. Left-wing MEPs are trying to delay the document, citing the Iraq crisis.  “The work pace should be increased, so that we are ready by the end of June,” said Elmar Brok, a German MEP. Brok said the conservatives are supporting a French-German proposal that the EU should create the office of a new, high-profile EU president with a five-year term.  Debate has been bogged down by 1,100 amendments, including whether or not a European Constitution should even mention God. Liberals generally say no, while some conservatives are fighting to have at least a token mention of the deity in the preamble. Some would be happy with a reference to “Christianity rooted in European history.” The convention chairman is former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing, a high-profile freemason, who has said he wants the EU to meet its June deadline for finalizing the document.  For newswire coverage:  https://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030302/ap_wo_en_po/eu_gen_germany_eu_constitution_2   To read about the EU Convention: https://european-convention.eu.int   For related coverage:  https://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030228/ap_on_re_eu/eu_constitution_2
