Toronto, August 2, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A professor at Tyndale University who is also a Fellow at the Ezra Institute of Contemporary Christianity, a Toronto-based evangelical organization that addresses today’s cultural issues, has weighed in on the debate in Canada about gestational legislation.

Scott Masson, PhD, professor of English at Tyndale, received his doctorate from the University of Durham, England, with one of his fields of specialization including Christianity. Masson told LifeSiteNews that he believes upper limit legislation to be morally wrong, because such laws give man—not God—the authority over life and death.

“While everyone would grant the merit in saving as many babies as possible, and thus acknowledge that is better to save some than none, what this comes down to is the essence of the pro-life position: it is not man but God alone who determines what life is, and where it begins and ends,” Masson stated.

Masson compared gestational laws, which he said allow some unborn babies to be killed in order to save others, to negotiating with terrorists. We do not have the authority to give way to terrorists even if we wanted to, he said, because God is “the Lord, the giver of Life,” not us.

“As soon as we collapse God’s absolute sovereignty over life into areas of prudential judgment, we endorse a pernicious form of relativism and thereby ‘co-operate with evil’,” Masson stated. “And by what standard shall we judge the gift of life without blaspheming the goodness of the Giver?”

Unless we insist on God’s complete authority over life, he continued, we give way to the “creed of secular humanism, which makes man into God… There is no end to that but the annihilation of God’s church.”

Masson agreed that backing certain types of just and incremental legislation, aimed at restricting abortion, is a good approach.

“We most definitely should follow the course of limiting the number of abortions without endorsing any abortion at any time in any way,” he stated. “There must be no capitulation to the powers of darkness that Christ has already conquered at the cross, for there is only one atonement for sins, and it was both full and final.”

Masson concluded by saying that he has a strong hope for the total overturn of abortion.

“We live in a day of apostasy and unfaithfulness, but God has given us His Spirit, and Jesus remains Lord over our land.  One day soon ‘every shall tongue (shall) confess’, i.e. ‘that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.’ (Phil. 2:11)… This is the moral issue of our day, and we will see it won, just as the abolitionists did in Wilberforce’s England.”
