CHICAGO, May 23 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Leaders of more than 50 groups that help people leave the homosexual lifestyle gathered last week in downtown Chicago to demand the American Psychiatric Association (APA) acknowledge that such a life change is possible.  Focus on the Family reports that marchers at the massive McCormick Place Convention Center carried signs reading, “Where’s the tolerance?” and “It’s my right to change.” The protesters said they represent tens of thousands of people who have left the homosexual lifestyle.

Speaking at the demonstration was Columbia University professor Dr. Robert Spitzer, one of the chief architects of the APA’s 1973 decision to stop diagnosing homosexuality as a mental disorder.  Spitzer, who is working on a study of former homosexuals, said he hopes to present the results at a future APA convention. The APA officially discourages its therapists from assisting anyone who desires to leave the homosexual lifestyle.
