(LifeSiteNews) — Having heard rumblings that conservative, Catholic, pro-life movie star Eduardo Verástegui is seriously considering running for president of Mexico, LifeSiteNews asked him point blank during an interview after the premiere of his new movie Sound of Freedom: “Are you going to be the next President of Mexico?
The question caught Verástegui and Angel Films CEO Neal Harmon, who was sitting at Verástegui’s side, by surprise.
“Oh wow!” Verástegui said as both gentlemen smiled and laughed.
“He hasn’t announced it yet, but I think he will,” said Harmon, clearly hoping for a Verástegui presidency.
“Pray for me. I only want to do God’s will. I love my country, I love God,” Verástegui said.
“I’m discerning every day, I’m asking him, ‘If it’s from you, please open all the doors, and if it’s not, close all the doors,’” he said. “I don’t want to be doing something that is not from you.”
“So, please pray for me, because this will be one of the most difficult decisions in my life,” Verástegui said. “And you will know, soon!”
The exchange took place at Washington, D.C.’s Museum of the Bible after a screening of Sound of Freedom, produced by Verástegui and starring Jim Caviezel.
Harmon wasn’t the only one nudging Verástegui to run for the chief executive of Mexico that night.
While standing on the red carpet at the start of the premiere, Alejandro Monteverde, Sound of Freedom’s director and a close collaborator with Verástegui, also encouraged his good friend to “run for president.”
Verástegui has been a hero of the pro-life movement in Mexico and the United States for more than two decades. His film credits attest to his commitment to protecting the right to life of the unborn (Bella, 2006), religious freedom (For Greater Glory, 2012) promotion of faith (Little Boy, 2015), and ending child-sex-trafficking (Sound of Freedom, 2022).
The actor has also established his credentials as a devout Catholic man of prayer who is committed to strengthening marriage and family and protecting religious freedom.
“The great country of Mexico deserves this great man as president,” tweeted Sachin Jose, showing a picture of Verástegui knelt in prayer, Rosary in hand, beneath the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

This isn’t the first time that pro-life movie star has mulled a run for the nation’s highest office. In 2017, interest swirled around the actor as a potential contender in the nation’s 2018 election.
The citizens of Mexico elect their president every six years. The next general election is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
