BOSTON, November 19, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Faith and family groups responded to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling to allow homosexual ‘marriage’ with warnings of dire consequences and promises to continue to fight for the protection of marriage.

Focus on the Family Chairman Dr. James Dobson warned, “The dire ramifications of what is happening in the United States and other Western nations cannot be overstated.”  Dobson continued, “The homosexual activist movement, which has achieved virtually every goal and objective it set out to accomplish more than 50 years ago, is now closer than it has ever been to administering a devastating and potentially fatal blow to the traditional family. What makes these developments so shocking is that the legal acceptance of homosexual marriage was little more than a pipe dream just a few years ago, but now it has become a tidal wave that is sweeping around the globe.”  Archbishop Sean P. O’Malley of Boston said, “My hope is that legislators will have the courage and common sense to redress this situation for the good of society.” The Massachusetts Catholic Conference said the decision “must be reversed.”  Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, “This is THE wake-up call for both the American public and our elected officials. If we do not amend the Massachusetts State Constitution so that it explicitly protects marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and if we do not amend the U.S. Constitution with a federal marriage amendment that will protect marriage on the federal level, we will lose marriage in this nation. We must amend the Constitution if we are to stop a tyrannical judiciary from redefining marriage to the point of extinction.”

President of the Christian Coalition of America Roberta Combs said, “Traditional marriage is one of the last obstacles to the complete normalization of homosexuality in America.  We urge each Member of Congress to secure the future for our children and grandchildren by sponsoring the Federal Marriage Amendment.”  Jan LaRue, chief counsel at Concerned Women for America commented on the four justices which ruled in favour of homosexual ‘marriage’ saying, “These are the court jesters of the century.  The Massachusetts Legislature should summon the moral courage to impeach the majority for their abuse of power and distortion of the state constitution.”

Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute warned on the effect the ruling will have on people of faith.  “To mandate marital recognition for non-marital relationships is to create a lie that will ensure coercion against people who stand for the truth,” warned Knight. “Christians are sure to be targets of persecution for their beliefs if ‘gay’ marriage is given legal backing.”
