OTTAWA, September 17, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The close vote (137/132) against the Canadian Alliance motion re-affirming the definition of marriage as a union of one man and one woman, is a betrayal by the Members of Parliament who changed their vote from the same motion four years ago, say Catholics and Evangelical leaders within the pro-life movement. “Those who voted against the motion are not representing the wishes of their constituents. We know that the overwhelming majority of people who contacted their MPs by calls, visits and e-mail were in support of traditional marriage,” said Hilary White, Director of Campaign Life Catholic (CL Catholic). “MPs must listen to their constituents on these matters and not be cowed by dictatorial leaders,” she continued. “Marriage is a sacred institution which pre-dates Parliaments and, as such, cannot be re-defined by the Canadian Parliament bent on pleasing a vocal minority,” said Royal Hamel, Director of Campaign Life Evangelical (CL Evangelical). “Chretien’s statement that he is ‘a great defender of the Charter of Rights’ is pathetic! Too bad he is not such a great defender of morality.” CL Catholic and CL Evangelical calls on all MPs to listen to their constituents, be present and vote against any attempt of the government to change the definition of marriage from the union of one man and one woman, if and when a Bill is presented.
