(LifeSiteNews) — Recently revealed emails show that former White House medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci knew about gain-of-function research taking place in China before the COVID-19 outbreak.
On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic released an email sent by Fauci to other medical colleagues on February 1, 2020 in which the since retired director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases admitted to knowledge that the Wuhan University was engaged in researching genetic mutation of organisms.
In the message, Fauci described certain topics discussed during a call with scientists from around the world. He began by clarifying the opinion of the group on “rumors that are going around [that] relate to the paper by an Indian group saying that there are HIV gene sequences inserted in the 2019-nCoV virus.” He emphasized that “all of the scientists on our call felt this was not credible” and that it was “not what they were concerned about.”

New emails reveal that Dr. Fauci was aware of risky gain-of-function research occurring in Wuhan, China prior to the emergence of COVID-19.

“They were concerned about the fact that upon viewing the sequences of several isolates of the nCoV, there were mutations in the virus that would be most unusual to have evolved naturally in the bats and that there was a suspicion that this mutation was intentionally inserted,” he continued.
“The suspicion was heightened by the fact that scientists in Wuhan University are known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanisms associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection, and the outbreak originated in Wuhan.”
Fauci noted that some of the scientists on the call were more concerned than others about this reality, while two “felt that it was entirely conceivable that this could have evolved naturally even though these mutations have never been seen in a bat virus before.” He concluded that everyone agreed with Fauci’s “suggestion to gather an even larger group under the auspices of an internationally credible organization.” Following such a course of action, he argued, allowed for “no assumption of foul play or guilt on anyone’s part and merely an intense scientific look at the evolutionary origins of this virus.”
In response to the uncovered email, the subcommittee requested additional information from the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra.
“Dr. Steward Simonson, the Assistant Director of the World Health Organization responsible for the WHO Office at the United Nations and the WHO-US Liaison Office requested that Dr. Fauci produce a one-page summary on the conference call,” the subcommittee wrote in a letter to Becerra dated July 13. “Further, according to a separate U.S. government official with knowledge of the conference call, the Department or one of its sub-agencies are in possession of contemporaneous notes from the conference call.”
The House subcommittee requested that “any document, summary, memo, one pager, or other work product that was produced because of the February 1, 2020 conference call and as referenced in the enclosed email chain” as well as “all notes in the custody and control of the Department or any of its sub-agencies resulting from the February 1, 2020 conference call” be provided to the subcommittee “no later than July 27, 2023.”
The revelation of Fauci’s knowledge about gain-of-function research comes months after additional emails showed he and Dr. Francis Collins — former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) — had presented a paper as evidence of debunking the theory that COVID-19 began due to a lab leak in Wuhan that reportedly “skewed evidence.”
Fauci had previously been found to be responsible for suppressing the lab leak theory that has been admitted as the probable origin of the virus by the WHO.
