Brooklyn nun: ‘Pornography is a sickness’ that can be overcome
July 29, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – Pornography is a “sickness,” Mother Miriam said on an episode of her radio show last week.
“It is a sickness, you have to believe that,” she said, emphasizing the need to show love to those working to break free from the chains of pornography.
A listener had emailed Mother seeking advice on dealing with her husband, who hadn’t fulfilled his promise to stop viewing pornography.
Mother lovingly shared the story of a young married man addicted to pornography who showed up at her door after hearing her on the radio. She spoke with this young man and directed him to work with a priest who specialized in helping men overcome pornography addictions. It took time, but the man overcame his addiction and sent Mother a beautiful bouquet of flowers to thank her for restoring his life and saving his family.
She emphasized the need to recall that there is always help for those who struggle with pornography addiction and neither they nor their loved ones should give up hope.
In addition to speaking of the ills of pornography, Mother stressed that men and women must be supported as they overcome their addiction. Pornography is an escape and the more abandoned and isolated a person feels, the more you he or she is being pushed toward that behavior.
Mother compared pornography to another deadly illness, cancer. We don’t give up on people who have cancer, she said, we help them find and undergo treatment in order to overcome the cancer. It may be many difficult months or years as a person recovers, but it is important to stand by him or her through the trials.
Mother encouraged the listener to support her husband in seeking help from a holy psychological professional or a holy priest who can help with the hurt and the root of the problem. Mother emphasized that getting to the root of the problem is the first step in stopping the addictive behavior.
According to a study published by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, 64 percent of young people, ages 13 - 24, actively seek out pornography weekly or more often. And the impacts of pornography are reverberating through the fabric of society. There is a rise in violent sexual encounters, with new studies showing women are increasingly afraid of sex. Sex is now a commodity to be bought, sold, and stolen. And finally, the consequences of sex are to be avoided at all costs, including murder of unborn babies.
Pornography really is a drug and those who are struggling need to seek help, and the rest of us need to lovingly support them through their recovery. As Mother Miriam, who has a heart filled with charity, so lovingly puts it, we wouldn’t abandon our loved ones struggling with another illness, we would stand by and fight porn with them. Changing the culture begins with us in our own homes, one person at a time.
