MEXICO CITY, March 12, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Archdiocese of Mexico City has issued a firm condemnation of Mexico City's first homosexual “marriages,” which were conducted Thursday in the nation's capital city.

Five couples were “married” in a ceremony that was attended by Mexico City governor Marcel Ebrard.

“They may be legal, but never moral,” said Hugo Valdemar, the spokesman of the archdiocese, about the “marriages.”

Valdemar specifically denounced Ebrard for his role in the approval of the new gay “marriage” ordinance, which also allows the adoption of children by homosexuals, and is currently being challenged in the nation's Supreme Court.

Ebrard, he said, “has made vulnerable the right of children to have a father and a mother,”

“It is clear that Señor Mareclo Ebrard is the one responsible for the approval and execution of these laws that are destructive of the family, and doesn't hide his aversion towards the churches and the majority of the inhabitants whom he governs, who profess the Christian faith and reject the perversion of their most respectable and cherished values, as is the case with the family,” said Valdemar.

The government of Mexico City, dominated by the socialist Party of the Democratic Revolution, has legalized abortion, “express divorce,” and homosexual “marriage” and adoption since 2007.  It has also distributed “sexual education” materials to students that teach that sodomy and other unnatural forms of sexual behavior are acceptable.

A recent poll taken by the conservative National Action Party revealed that a majority of citizens in the nation's capital oppose the idea of “matrimony” between people of the same sex, and a very large majority oppose the adoption of children by homosexuals.

Mexico City is currently being sued in the Supreme Court by the nation's Attorney General, as well as by several state governors concerned by the possible effects of the new law.

“We hope that the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation will defend the superior right of children and cast down this perverse law, and that future legislatures in the capital will repeal the pile of laws that are destroying Mexican families, and that have been approved and ratified,” said Valdemar in reference to the lawsuits.
