WHITBY, ON, November 26, 2001 ( – Jim Flaherty, the only candidate in the race for Ontario Tory Leader who has declared himself pro-life, launched his campaign Friday. Flaherty, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, used his speech to his supporters to emphasize that he is a man of principle and solidly in support of the private school tax credit which he initiated.

Political insiders say that while the other contenders for Leader have all said they would not remove the tuition tax credit, their statements are based on fear of negative reactions from voters rather than a commitment to the long-awaited tax credit. Flaherty is known to have fought a fierce battle within the party to secure the tax credit for parents.
