ORLANDO, May 15, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Florida circuit judge has defied pro-life Republican Governor Jeb Bush by delaying a decision on whether a guardian should be appointed for the fetus of a mentally disabled rape victim. Gov. Bush had brought the issue to a head when he overruled regional child welfare officials and ordered them not to wait until birth to seek a guardian for the unborn child. However, Judge Lawrence Kirkwood limited a 30-minute court hearing to whether the pregnant 22-year-old woman should remain in state custody in a nursing home, and said arguments over whether she and her fetus should be appointed guardians would be heard later.
