BOCA RATON, March 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Florida Atlantic University (FAU), one of the state's 11 public universities, has announced it will soon begin experimentation on human embryonic stem cells, using cells from a University of Wisconsin affiliate, one of only four U.S. bodies approved by the Bush Administration to exploit existing stem cell lines derived from embryos already destroyed prior to 2001.
“We're a month or two away from really starting our research in earnest,” said Larry Lemanski, a stem cell scientist and FAU's vice president for research. “We are going to do this and we think it will work.
Lemanski says FAU is already testing adult stem cells, and will compare the results with those of embryonic experiments. If adult stem cells prove equally versatile, he says, “It takes away all of the legal implications and the bad press that embryonic stem cells have gotten.”
