NORFOLK, VA, May 21, 2013, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Police in Virginia have arrested a former abortion facility employee for helping a friend induce labor, causing her newborn baby to die shortly after birth.

Rachael Anne Lowe, 27, had once worked at Tidewater Women's Health Clinic, a Norfolk abortion facility.

Her roommate, 20-year-old Jessica Renee Carpenter, was 25 weeks pregnant when she arrived at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center already in labor.

Her baby boy survived 20 minutes after being born, hospital officials said.

Soon after the “miscarriage,” the city's child protective services received an anonymous tip that Carpenter and Lowe took measures to ensure the child would die.

Police interviewed three women who said they “heard direct statements from both Carpenter and Lowe that they purchased items from GNC to to ingest to cause the pregnancy to terminate,” according to the police search warrant.

Officers say the two considered stealing supplies from Lowe's former employer to aid in the process.

“The witnesses were also privy to the conversation in which Lowe and Carpenter conspired to break into the business of Tidewater Women's Health Clinic to procure instruments known to induce labor,” the warrant states.

However, police do not believe the two broke into the abortion clinic, which was cited last May for its unsanitary conditions.

Norfolk police charged the women with one count of producing an illegal abortion and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. The illegal abortion charge could result in up to 10 years in prison. The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office said the two had posted bond and been released.

The women's actions supply new evidence that abortion workers are comfortable killing newborn children outside the womb, something reformers say needs to be stamped out.

Earlier this month, Kermit Gosnell was found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder and hundreds of other violations of Pennsylvania state law for killing newborn babies with scissors in his “house of horrors” abortion business.

Since his conviction, other abortionists have been accused of practicing infanticide.

Dr. Douglas Karpen, who owns three abortion facilities in the Houston area, has been dubbed the “Texas Gosnell.” Three of his former employees – Deborah Edge, Krystal Rodriguez, and Gigi Aguilar – said Dr. Karpen would twist the heads off living babies with his bare hands, insert instruments into the soft spot of their heads, or cram his finger down their windpipes to asphixiate them. Houston prosecutors are now investigating the actions at his Aaron Women’s Clinic.

Live Action recently released a series of videos exposing late-term abortionists who said they were willing to allow a newborn to die outside the womb. They named the series “Inhuman.”

An undercover investigator filmed Dr. Cesare F. Santangelo of the Washington Surgi-Clinic saying that if a baby were born alive in his office, “we would not help it.” Another taped a worker at Dr. Emily’s Women’s Health Center in the Bronx advising her that, if she gives birth, she should “flush it” down the toilet.

At about the same time, Alisa Lapolt Snow, a lobbyist representing Planned Parenthood, told Florida state legislators in March that the decision about whether a doctor should try to save a newborn baby born alive during a botched abortion “should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician.”

Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamics, Inc., which released the video of Karpen's employees, told AFR Talk Radio Network talk show host Bryan Fischer last Friday that, during his decades in the pro-life movement, live births during abortion had gone from a “dreaded complication” that abortionists “didn't want” to being “commonplace” – and deliberate.

“It's not only easier for [the abortionists], but it reduces their exposure to medical malpractice,” as they can avoid “introducing sharp instruments into the woman's uterus,” he said.

Some in Washington would like to see that come to an end.

Senators Mike Lee, R-UT, and Ted Cruz, R-TX, have introduced a resolution calling on lawmakers to “evaluate the extent to which such abortions involve violations of the natural right to life of infants who are born alive, or are capable of being born alive, and therefore are entitled to equal protection under the law.”

“Everyone in this body should be supporting an investigation to make sure there are not other Kermit Gosnells across this country,” Sen. Cruz said.
