VANCOUVER, April 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Focus on the Family Canada has condemned the ruling on child pornography issued last Tuesday by British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Duncan Shaw. Shaw determined that John Robin Sharpe’s fictional stories of men engaged in violent sexual acts involving boys had “some artistic merit,” and so could not be classified as child pornography.

Focus on the Family Canada President Dr. Darrel Reid blasted the decision. “This ruling ought to alert the government to the clear and present danger facing our children,” Reid said. “Parliament needs to send a strong and forceful message that child pornography of any kind will not be tolerated in this country. If no action is taken, we will see every pedophile and sexual pervert attempting to use ‘artistic merit’ as a defense for the pornographic writings they possess or produce.”

B.C. Attorney General Geoff Plant, said no decision has been made on whether the ruling will be appealed. “We’ll have a look at the reasons, study them and determine what course of action, if any, is appropriate,” he told Canadian Press.

Focus encourages Canadians to contact their MPs by writing a letter, e-mail or fax, or talking directly to the MPs. “Ask them to support tough new amendments to the current child pornography law that will ensure that written materials that promote and glorify pedophilia and sadomasochistic sexual activities involving children are made illegal in Canada.”
