VANCOUVER, Dec 11, 2000 (LSN.ca) – Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, seen by many as the most unpopular prime minister in Canadian history, was quoted in the National Post today calling on Conservatives to unite but only under a banner of fiscal conservatism. Mulroney, another prominent, pro-abortion “Catholic” politician like Trudeau, Chretien and Clark, emphasized that this renewed conservative movement must reject social conservatism, especially on the matter of abortion. He suggested that the Alliance’s social conservatism was the reason it did not perform better in Ontario. ‘‘You cannot have a political party with social conservatism. It does not work in Ontario. It does not work in Quebec or in Eastern Canada,” said Mulroney.
An objective look at the recent election statistics indicate the opposite of Mulroney’s musings. The West, which saw a vast majority of Alliance candidates elected, ran a strong majority (at least 68%) of pro-life Alliance candidates. In the East, and especially Ontario – where the Alliance won only two seats – only 42% of Alliance candidates were pro-life. As well, a greater percentage of Ontario pro-life candidates had qualifying exceptions than did western pro-life candidates. In fact, the only two wins which the Alliance did pick up in Ontario were by strong pro-life candidates! As well, all pro-life Ontario Liberals were re-elected (with substantial majorities) and the four eastern Canadian pro-life Tories were re-elected. However, the pro-life movement does NOT suggest that these pro-life candidates won only because they were pro-life. Instead it emphasizes that their being pro-life in no way hindered their political wins and, if anything, very likely helped.
