TAMPA BAY, Florida (LifeSiteNews) — Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy publicly challenged pro-abortion arguments on social media.

In a series of recent tweets, the pro-life and pro-family retired football coach defended the unborn with evidence from both the Bible and state laws protecting them.

“Good bases to make policy are those listed in the constitution, including a women’s right to privacy afforded to her by the 14th amendment,” a pro-abortion advocate argued. “Someone who follows scripture can decide they don’t want that right, but they cannot take it from their neighbor.”

Dungy looked at the question from the side of the unborn baby at risk.

“The question is: Does the baby have any rights? If you don’t believe it’s a life then it has no rights. But…if you believe it’s a life then it has rights. 38 states have fetal homicide laws implying they think it is a life,” he responded.

Dungy also challenged misconceptions about the Bible’s representation of the unborn, sharing some scriptural passages that affirm the sanctity of the unborn child’s life.

This was challenged, however, by an abortion advocate.

“Again, ‘Before I formed you in the womb’ would be prior to conception. This passage is not stating that life begins at conception. It’s about what goes on before conception in the mind of God,” one tweet claimed

“Yes, God said He knew Jeremiah before He formed him,” Dungy answered. “But [Verse] 5 says….I formed you in your mother’s womb. That says a lot right there. God formed the baby, not man. Did you read the other two passages?”

“So we’re siding with people from 2000 years ago who also had the belief that if you were sick it was most likely due to the fact that you had sinned,” another tweet stated

“No. I’m basing my opinion on what God said, not what people want to advocate,” Dungy replied.

This is not the first time that Dungy has defended the unborn. In 2021, he publicly wondered why President Joe Biden had rebelled against Catholic teaching and become a fervent abortion supporter.
