PC Leader Shows “He wants to exclude social conservatives”

CALGARY, May 31, 2001 (LSN.ca) – For the first time in Canadian history, a former prime minister is going to lead a gay pride parade. Progressive Conservative Leader and former prime minister Joe Clark, who calls himself a “Catholic”, will marshal the Gay Pride parade in Calgary June 10. The Calgary Sun reports Clark’s press secretary Marie-Chantale Lepine confirmed he was to lead the parade and added, “He was honoured to be asked.”

Hermina Dykxhoorn, president of the Alberta Federation of Women United for Families, told the paper that Clark’s gay pride ride sends a message to Canada that the Tory leader cares more for the “militant homosexual rights movement” than for conservative political unity. “He wants to exclude, rather than include, social conservatives,” she said.
