OTTAWA, April 26, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Former Progressive Conservative Party Leader Joe Clark has been lambasted for his comments on CTV yesterday endorsing Liberal Leader Paul Martin over Conservative Leader Stephen Harper. The comments came a day after former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney endorsed Harper as the Conservative Leader. In comments which party insiders say come from a sour grapes “bitter old man” and a “traitor”, Clark when asked to choose between Harper and Martin for Prime Minister said, “I personally would prefer to go with the devil we know” (referring to Martin). He concluded, “I’m that concerned about the imprint of Stephen Harper.” The reaction to Clark’s comments from his political confreres came swift and hard. John Reynolds, House Leader for the Conservatives told the National Post, “I’m mad. He’s being a traitor to the Conservative cause. Here is a party that he tried to put together a couple of years ago, he was bragging about his coalition, and it didn’t work.’’ Conservative Tony Clement who fought against Harper for the Conservative Leadership quipped, “It’s sad, and here’s the saddest comment: It really doesn’t matter.” Conservative Senator Marjory LeBreton, said Clark’s comments marked “quite an inglorious end to a great career for Joe Clark.” See the interview excerpts from the Star and the reaction from the Post: https://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1082931009180&call_pageid=968332188774&col=968350116467 https://www.canada.com/national/nationalpost/news/story.html?id=d9972291-d9fb-43b8-880e-3991d0614e34
