OTTAWA, May 4 (LSN.ca) – Former Tory Kitchener Member of Parliament John Reimer has endorsed Canadian Alliance Leadership Candidate Stockwell Day.  “I see Stockwell Day standing for the same conservative principles that I stand for,” Mr. Reimer said in an interview reported in Thursday’s National Post.

The Post reports that, while Tom Long “has strong support from provincial Tories, Mr. Day appears to be picking up Tories who identify with his social conservative values.” The Post also reports that Mr. Reimer “wants a law to ban abortions in Canada. He said he is not particularly happy with Mr. Day’s stance that such a law would have to be brought forward through citizen initiative.”  Reimer added: “The populist way is to wait to see if there is a groundswell in the country before you do something about it…I disagree with that and I’ve told Stockwell that.  I think one has to be a leader.”

For the moment, Reimer plans to maintain his membership in the federal PC party, since his support for the Canadian Alliance is conditional on Stockwell Day’s success in the leadership contest.
