Abortion, MAP in Schools, and Foetal Tissue Transplants

PARIS, Dec 1 (LSN.ca) – This week news from France showed an acceleration in the culture of death as the French government voted to extend abortion’s availability up to the 12th week of pregnancy. Catholic World News reported that another portion of the legislation regarding parental permission for minors seeking abortion under debate. The legislature also approved the distribution of abortifacient morning-after-pills to students in schools.

Moreover, the current issue of the Lancet journal reveals that researchers in France have used the brains of aborted babies in experiments to treat Huntington’s Disease. Researchers from the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM), transplanted healthy brain cells from seven nine-week-old aborted babies into five people with mild Huntington’s symptoms. The study claims that a year after the operation, three subjects demonstrated improvements in their motor and cognitive functions. The BBC reports that INSERM is now planning further tests on 60 patients, to be carried out with other French and Belgian research teams.

The researchers were questioned on the legality of their experiments but insisted they did not infringe the law. However, only this Tuesday French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin proposed a bill allowing the use of human embryos for experimentation. United Press International reports Jospin told the France’s National Ethics Advisory Committee: “I am convinced that French society wants such fundamental values to support .. advancement of scientific knowledge and their potential application in the area of human health.”
