BEGLES, France, July 27, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A court nullified Tuesday the first same-sex “marriage” performed in France. Noel Mamère, mayor of Begles, despite warnings from government officials that the ceremony was illegal, “married” two men, a nurse and a shop worker, June 5.
As a result of his defiant action, Mamère, who is also a Green Party member of national parliament, was later stripped of his mayoral duties by Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin for one month. French legislation allows for mayors to be penalized if they “gravely misunderstand the duties of their office.” The court decision to nullify the marriage does not come into effect pending an appeal.
