PARIS, January 4, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Court cases in France which have held doctors responsible for failing to detect disabilities in unborn children and thus have them aborted have caused doctors to refuse to offer ultrasound scans to newly pregnant mothers. The BBC reports that doctors argue that scan results provide far from accurate diagnoses.

A French journalist told the BBC that the government has promised legislation on the matter to protect doctors. In various cases ruled on by the country’s highest court, parents of disabled children and even the disabled children themselves have been awarded large sums of money for not being given the option of abortion.
