SACRAMENTO, California (LifeSiteNews) — Far-left Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom signed even more pro-abortion bills into law Sunday, tucked among a slate of bills purportedly aimed at “strengthening California’s robust reproductive healthcare system.”
“As Donald Trump continues to attack reproductive freedom and women’s choices regarding their own bodies, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed nine bills strengthening California’s robust reproductive healthcare system, including expanding access to care for students and veterans, bolstering perinatal and postpartum care, and allowing qualified health professionals to serve more people within their training and experience,” the governor’s office announced. “This builds on existing laws and programs that have made California the leader in protecting reproductive rights nationwide.”
While five of the nine bills were focused on non-abortion health topics, the true purpose of the remaining four was to expand abortion-on-demand.
As detailed by Live Action, AB 1854 strengthened California’s so-called “shield laws,” which prevent state law enforcement from cooperating with outside investigations of California abortionists who break other states’ pro-life laws. AB 1973 empowers medical workers other than actual physicians to commit abortions in the second trimester or later. AB 2531 extends state-funded abortion insurance to military veterans and requires state VA offices to link to abortion information. AB 2540 requires California State University and University of California campus health centers to offer abortion pills and related information.
“Freedom means being able to make deeply personal decisions without elected officials inserting themselves in pursuit of a political agenda,” Newsom declared. “California is protecting that freedom and showing the nation, particularly under increasingly severe attacks by the Trump administration, what is possible when we put patients and people first – not politics.”
The governor’s office claimed the new laws “add to California’s nation-leading protections on reproductive and maternal health,” but their combined practical impact will be to make abortionists less likely to be punished for breaking laws, ensure more abortions are performed by individuals with a lower degree of medical training and credentials, and increase the number of chemical abortions committed without medical professionals even present.
California was already known as one of the most pro-abortion states in the Union and under Newsom has been working to solidify its status as a haven for abortion-on-demand and transgenderism. In February, it sued the Trump administration to resist rules that schools keep parents informed if their children identify as a gender other than their true sex.
California law declares a “fundamental right” to abortion, offers taxpayer funding for the practice, and prohibits cooperation with law enforcement from other states attempting to investigate or prosecute abortions across state lines. It also subsidizes abortion pills on college campuses, attempts to punish pro-life pregnancy centers for informing women of the option of abortion pill reversal, has pledged to make up funds Planned Parenthood lost to federal restrictions, and last fall enacted a law letting abortion drugs be mailed without identifying a prescribing doctor or pharmacy on the label to shield facilitators from prosecution by pro-life states.
