SAN FRANCISCO, September 20, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Same-sex “marriage” advocates have a meeting scheduled with aides to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for Wednesday, two days before Schwarzenegger receives a bill passed by lawmakers there that legalizes same-sex “marriage.” The governor said he plans to veto the bill.
Schwarzenegger’s spokesman, Margita Thompson, claimed that the “marriage” bill was not going to be discussed at the meeting tomorrow and that it is not an indication that his will is wavering on the issue. “This is an outreach meeting that happens within the normal course of business, and I understand there is heightened media interest,” Thompson maintained, according to a pinknews.co.uk report. “The legislation is specifically not going to be discussed.”
Schwarzenegger maintains that the issue is one that should be decided by the courts, not the elected legislature. Schwarzenegger said his decision to veto the law came in response to the public expression against homosexual “marriage” in 2000 when 61% of Californians voted to support Proposition 22 – the Defense of Marriage Act.
