(LifeSiteNews) – A study recently reported on by Reuters shows that the annual number of children diagnosed with gender dysphoria in the United States tripled within five years.

On Thursday, Reuters reported on data compiled by Komodo Health Inc. that shows the extent to which children between the ages of 6 and 17 in the United States are now identifying as something other than their sex.

“Thousands of children in the United States now openly identify as a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth [sic],” said Reuters.

The data shows that between 2017 and 2021, the number of children diagnosed with gender dysphoria has tripled. During these years, at least 121,882 children between the ages of 6 and 17 were diagnosed with gender dysphoria, 42,000 of them in 2021 alone.

Along with this increased number of gender-confused children, Reuters also found that the number of children receiving some form of “gender-affirming care” – chemical or surgical mutilation – for gender dysphoria has also increased. The various routes children take to “fix” or “cure” their gender dysphoria can include the administration of puberty blockers around age 10-11, the use of cross-sex hormones, and lastly, surgery to remove healthy sexual organs.

Puberty blockers block the body’s production of sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. According to Reuters, “the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the drugs to treat prostate cancer, endometriosis and central precocious puberty, but not gender dysphoria.

Their off-label use in gender-affirming care, while legal, lacks the support of clinical trials to establish their safety for such treatment,” the liberal news agency admitted

However, despite the experimental status of puberty blockers, Reuters found that the number of gender-confused children between the ages of 6 and 17 who were put on them went from 633 in 2017 to 1,390 in 2021.

“Over the last five years, there were at least 4,780 adolescents who started on puberty blockers and had a prior gender dysphoria diagnosis,” Reuters said.

However, it also clarified that this number is likely much higher, since the data only covered the number of children on puberty blockers who had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and who were covered by insurance. “Practitioners may not log this diagnosis when prescribing [puberty blockers],” Reuters added.

Reuters also found that at least 14,726 children ages 6 to 17 with this diagnosis were put on hormones between the years 2017 to 2021.

Reuters noted that the use of cross-sex hormones is dangerous and understudied.

“Hormone treatment may leave an adolescent infertile, especially if the child also took puberty blockers at an early age,” it said. “That and other potential side effects are not well-studied, experts say.”

Reuters also reported on Komodo Health Inc.’s findings regarding the number of children who received “gender re-assignment” surgeries. From 2019 to 2021, Komodo found that at least 776 “top surgeries,” or mastectomies, were performed on children from 13 to 17. It also found that there had been at least 56 genital surgeries for this same age range between 2019 and 2021. However, these numbers again only applied to children who received a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, and so the numbers are likely much higher. Reuters also mentioned that these numbers were only for surgeries covered by insurance, and that “this tally does not include procedures that were paid for out of pocket.”
