(LifeSiteNews) — A lobbying group belonging to far-left billionaire George Soros contributed $4.5 million to pass a proposed amendment to the Michigan Constitution that would enshrine state-level “rights” to abortion and sterilization.
Michigan Proposal 3, the so-called Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative (RRFI), would establish a state “constitutional right” to “reproductive freedom,” defined as the “right to make and effectuate decisions about all matters relating to pregnancy, including but not limited to prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, contraception, sterilization, abortion care, miscarriage management, and infertility care.”
Legal analysts warn that the initiative’s language would apply to minors as well, effectively eliminating parental notification and consent requirements for a wide range of procedures.
Michigan is one of three states voting on such initiatives next week, while other states work to establish the opposite with pro-life initiatives.
The Open Society Policy Center (OSPC) has donated $4.5 million to Reproductive Freedom for All, the political action committee organized to support the Michigan initiative. OSPC is a lobbying organization under the umbrella of Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF).

Soros, a leftist philanthropist who has long been involved in bankrolling all manner of left-wing causes, has invested heavily in pro-abortion advocacy, including the election of state and local prosecutors who refuse to enforce duly-enacted pro-life laws and donations to organizations in blue states to facilitate abortions for out-of-state abortion seekers.
On June 24, OSF called the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling, which overturned Roe v. Wade and restored states’ ability to set their own abortion laws, an “assault on women’s rights, human rights, and democracy that will have a damaging impact around the world” and declared itself “proud to invest in grassroots and national reproductive rights organizations who are fighting back at this moment, both in the United States and globally.”
While the Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade represented an enormous victory for the pro-life movement, allowing for pro-life laws to take effect in numerous states, the issue remains far from resolved. Democrats in states such as Michigan want to sidestep the Supreme Court by rooting abortion “rights” in state constitutions, while national Democrats support both codifying a right to abortion in federal law and promoting interstate travel from abortion-free states to abortion-friendly ones, to get around pro-life laws.
Pro-life groups such as the Thomas More Society and the National Association of Christian Lawmakers are currently exploring potential policies to counteract the problem, though any state-level response will likely face difficult legal challenges. Regardless, pro-lifers say the problem highlights the need for abortion bans in states that don’t yet have them and for settling the issue in every state by eventually passing a federal ban.
