ATLANTA, February 16, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Homosexual activists are up in arms over a Georgia House measure that requires students wishing to join school clubs to first receive parental approval. The activists charge that the measure is meant to discourage students from joining homosexual clubs.
The bill, which passed 143-25, allows parents to prevent their children from joining a school club they disapprove of. A similar measure is pending in the Senate.
Because the government administers schools, the House felt it had an obligation to help parents know what their children are up to, according to the bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Bobby Reese. “It’s our obligation to the stockholders in this state, in the school system, that they should know what’s going on with their children,” he said, according to the AP.
“I don’t know about you but when I was in school, there was no need for this kind of legislation,” said state Rep. Len Walker (R-Loganville), before a vote on the measure, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “There was no need for this type of legislation because the clubs and organizations . . . were honorable and were right for kids. Isn’t it a tragedy that we no longer live in such a state as that?”
