BERLIN, Jan 8 (LSN) – A 35-year-old woman from a village in Lower Saxony who was 25 weeks’  pregnant was told her baby had a genetic defect which would cause Down’s syndrome.  An abortuary then offered to kill her baby but the attempted abortion “went disastrously wrong”  and the baby lived.  The baby, which weighed 1lb 8oz and was 12.5 inches long at birth, was left wrapped in a blanket for 10 hours after birth without receiving any help.  Seeing the baby was still alive the doctors in consultation with the parents decided that they would live the child medical assistance. Despite being severely hurt by the abortion attempt, the baby is still clinging to life in a hospital in Oldenburg.  The case has sparked renewed debate in Germany over abortion.  Even pro-abortion doctors are calling for a ban on abortions of fetuses more than 20 weeks old.  The abortion law currently allows abortion on medical grounds at any point during a pregnancy. German MP Hubert Hüppe,  a member of Chancellor Kohl’s Christian Democratic Union, brought charges against the doctors saying that they failed in their duty to care for the child after it was born alive. Prof Detlev Mühlenstedt, head of the clinic, dismissed the charges blaming the mother for delaying the diagnosis and said, “not the trace of an accusation can be made against us”.
