BIRMINGHAM, England, November 4, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A newborn baby girl whose mother abandoned her in a duffel bag in a park was rescued when a German Shepherd ran to the bag and refused to leave her side.

Roger Wilday, 68, was walking his nine-year-old dog Jade in Marlborough House Community Park Thursday when Jade ran to the bag.

“I walked over and saw a carrier bag – then I saw it move,” Roger said. “I thought it was a bag of kittens, but then I saw her little arms and a head, and the baby started to cry.’

Inside was a six-pound girl wrapped in a blue blanket and abandoned, her umbilical cord still attached.

Roger phoned the police, who rushed the girl to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Authorities said the girl is “alert, happy and contented.”

Police said the girl was less than 24 hours old and had been abandoned about half-an-hour before the dog found her. West Midlands Police Chief Inspector Ian Green said the dog's devotion saved the infant's life. “Even just a few more hours exposed to the elements could have had fatal consequences,” he said.

Roger and wife Catherine, 65, have four children and five grandchildren, including a two-week-old granddaughter, Liza.

“Jade has grown up with children around her, she loves babies,” Roger said.

Catherine was surprised, telling local media, “Jade’s never found anything before.”

Police are now trying to locate the girl's mother.

Until she is located, nurses have given the baby a fitting name. They call her Jade.
