BERLIN, January 16, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Kerstin Mueller, a leading member of Germany’s Green Party and a junior foreign minister, has told a German newspaper that the country’s left-wing coalition government is considering abandoning its support for “therapeutic” cloning for medical research purposes and embracing a more complete ban. Previously, Germany opposed only “reproductive” or “live birth” cloning. Reports suggest that the minister gave this information to the right-of-centre Frankfurter Allgemeine. Until now, her government had joined with France in leading the resistance to United States opposition to all types of cloning at the international level. Both the Green Party and the somewhat centre-right Christian Democrats voted for a comprehensive ban in party caucuses this week. Combined with public outcry against cloning, these developments seem to be forcing the government to reconsider its position. For more details see: www.c-fam.org
