FORT WORTH, February 5, 2013 (LifeSiteNews) – Governor Rick Perry “will go down in history as an authoritarian, a dictatorial, unacceptable American,” said feminist icon Gloria Steinem, 78, before delivering the keynote address at the Planned Parenthood's annual fundraising luncheon last week.

Perry, a strongly pro-life governor, earned the ire of Planned Parenthood supporters after taking bold steps to defund the abortion giant in the state last year.

Steinem made the remarks to the Star-Telegram Friday, just before taking the podium to speak to a crowd of 800+ abortion supporters at the Omni Hotel, who collectively raised more than $230,000 for Planned Parenthood.

“This does not compensate for the … amounts of federal funds this state has lost because of his actions,” said Steinem.  She urged Texans to “dis-elect him, get rid of him, get rid of the guy.”

“Can't you impeach him?” she asked.

Last year, Perry rejected federal funds for healthcare for Texas’s poor in order to defund abortion in the state.

Currently, federal money for healthcare comes with strings attached, namely that any “federally certified” group is eligible to and must receive state funds.  Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, is one of those groups.

In lieu of federal money, Texas has founded its own program for health care for the poor, one that excludes any provider that performs abortions.  Planned Parenthood sued to stop the state, but a federal court upheld the state’s actions.  Since then, fourteen Planned Parenthood clinics in the state have closed their doors.

As a result, Planned Parenthood estimates that there could be 23,760 additional births to Medicaid eligible women in Texas, potentially costing taxpayers millions.

“[Perry is] putting very unfair restrictions on Planned Parenthood, on women's decision or not to have children,” Steinem told the crowd. “He's punished even those … parts of Planned Parenthood that don't offer safe and legal abortions.”

She jokingly recommended Perry be kicked out of the country for his strong opposition to abortion.  “He might be more at home in some parts of Afghanistan because his attitudes toward female human beings more resemble those in other countries,” said Steinem.
