January 15, 2014 (The Cardinal Newman Society) – Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, who supports abortion rights and same-sex marriage, was recently honored at an event that took place at the Jesuits’ Fairfield University, according to the homepage of the University website.  The page prominently features a photo of Malloy alongside the University president, Father Jeffrey von Arx, S.J.

Fr. von Arx and several faculty members were in attendance for the presentation of the 2013 Innovation Policy Leadership Award by the Connecticut Technology Council (CTC).

Malloy has a long history of holding positions antithetical to the faith.

Planned Parenthood.org lists Governor Malloy under the banner of “Mayors and Governors Stand with Planned Parenthood.” Gov. Malloy said of Republican attemptsto cut federal funding to the abortion giant, “These kinds of cuts would be devastating for Connecticut and it would be a gigantic blow to individuals in the state.  I can only imagine this is a politically motivated vote, having nothing to do with public health, or the welfare of children or women’s [sic].”

Malloy once even issued a press release celebrating the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion.  “I've been a lifelong advocate and strong supporter of a woman's right to choose,” he said.

On same-sex marriage, Malloy spoke cavalierly, “Historically, two people get married.  We're not changing history.  We might be changing the sex of individuals or the concept that they're both of the same sex, but we're not changing anything. A registration is a registration is a registration.”

Malloy is also a strong supporter of the HHS mandate, which forces Catholic institutions to facilitate coverage to employees for abortifacients, contraceptives and sterilization procedures.  In 2012, the White House even reportedly thanked Malloy, a Boston College graduate, for speaking out publicly in favor of the HHS contraceptive mandate.  “I think it's the right rule,” Malloy reportedly told Joe Scarborough on his MSNBC show.

None of those issues appear to have been raised however, at the event, according to the release from the University.  In fact, according to the press release, Engineering Dean Dr. Bruce Berdanier had an opportunity to speak with Gov. Malloy at the event.  “The Governor asked me about how the School of Engineering was growing, and we talked about the undergraduate and graduate numbers.  He said, 'This is great, we definitely need more engineers.' “

This is not the first time Malloy was invited to the Jesuit campus.  In 2012, Fairfield reportedly hosted an event called the “State of the State” speech at the business school.
