NUUK, July 27, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Figures from NOMESCO, the Nordic health statistics committee, show that Greenlandic girls aged between 15 and 19, have far more abortions than girls of the same age in Denmark, Finland, the Aland Islands, Norway and Sweden. The report notes that in the mid-1990s, one in ten Greenlandic girls had an abortion while the same figure for the rest of the Nordic region was about one in 50.
The report, featured by the Nordic Business Report, also said that Greenland’s teenage girls get pregnant and have children nearly ten times as often as their Nordic counterparts. The statistics show that there were almost 80 births to 1,000 Greenlandic teenage girls, while the same figure for Denmark was 8 births to 1,000 teenage girls.
