(LifeSiteNews) — Traditional Catholic NFL kicker Harrison Butker has joined in the chorus of voices criticizing Chicago Cardinal Archbishop Blasé Cupich for his politically correct prayer at this year’s Democratic National Convention (DNC).

On Monday, Cupich kicked off this year’s meeting, which has repeatedly touted the Democratic Party’s wholehearted embrace of killing the unborn, with an invocation.

At the start of his remarks, Cupich notably failed to make the sign of the cross. He also didn’t mention the Holy Name of Jesus. His pectoral cross likewise remained hidden tucked inside his coat pocket out of sight from his audience.

Cupich proceeded to speak about overcoming division while giving empty platitudes about human dignity. Ultimately, he failed to impress upon his audience the need for conversion to Christ and to stop supporting policies that lead souls to hell.

Butker is currently at training camp with his back-to-back Super Bowl championship team, the Kansas City Chiefs. On Wednesday, he rebuked Cupich’s weak remarks in an X post.

“America needs more Jesus not less,” he asserted. “We need our shepherds to fearlessly lead and not be afraid to proclaim that Christ is King. It starts with bishops boldly wearing their pectoral cross outside their jackets.”

Butker’s sharp criticism was amplified by Bishop Emeritus of Tyler, Texas, Joseph Strickland, who praised him on X.

“Amen Harrison, thanks for being a voice for Christ. I hope you inspire more shepherds to do THEIR job and speak the truth of Christ rather than compromising the truth and being cozy with the world.”

Cupich’s prayer has been roundly criticized by Catholics across the world. Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano said “the scandalous endorsements of Blase Cupich and the heretical ultra-progressive Jesuits in favor of Harris and Walz and the radical Left woke agenda confirm the blood pact between the globalist Deep State and the Bergoglian Deep Church.”

Strickland himself initially said, “we will never have peace until we return to God and respect life. The Cardinal’s presence there is a missed opportunity to call the Democratic Party back from the abyss.”

Cupich’s remarks stood in contrast to the invocation given by Archbishop Jerome Listecki at the Republican National Convention last month.

Although Listecki, who oversees the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, did not make the Sign of the Cross, he did beg God, “through Jesus Christ Our Lord,” to help “our elected officials and candidates always to protect our freedoms, to preserve our democracy, and to govern fairly.”

He also asked that they have “the wisdom every day to place the good of our nation above personal interests and to cherish our Union.”

While there have been conflicting reports about whether abortions have been taking place on site at the DNC, what is true is that Planned Parenthood has set up mobile “clinics” in the downtown Chicago area just minutes away from the event that have distributed chemical abortion pills to at least 10 women.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, abortion is one of the four sins that cries to Heaven for vengeance because it is the murder of an innocent, unborn human life.
