LOS ANGELES, California, January 26, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) — A celebrity Hollywood divorce lawyer has launched a website that will enable couples to divorce via their computers or tablets and skip having to hire an attorney or going to the courthouse.
Laura Wasser says the goal for ItsOverEasy.com is “changing the face of divorce.”
Wasser, who has represented personalities such as Angelina Jolie, Christina Aguilera and Johnny Depp, wanted to use some of the strategies she has acquired during her career to help regular couples, Fox Business reported.
The idea came from her personal online shopping habits, the report said, and from hearing that some people want to handle their own divorces but find the process too confusing, expensive or intimidating.
“I feel like there's so many people who these days shop online, date online, bank online — maybe they actually even met dating online — and now they're married,” Wasser said. “Why not give them the opportunity to do this online?”
Both parties must to use the site to complete their judgment, but work is transferable to an attorney if necessary.
Its offerings are part-service, part lifestyle-oriented, with Wasser and others sharing approaches to managing finances during one’s breakup, co-parenting children and getting through holiday gatherings.
Users fill in financial information and other details about their situation, such as scheduling specifics related to children, and at the end of process both parties will have documents that can facilitate legal divorces and custody agreements.
The process used on Wasserman’s new site mirrors the questions she asks clients and her approach to try to keep breakups amicable.
She said she counsels people going through divorce or the end of a long-term relationship to remember the moments they really cared for the other person and focus on what came out of the relationship to best preserve better emotional health.
“Its Over Easy” has three price tiers. It starts at $750 for a guided, do-it-yourself process and then has a mid-range, which includes serving papers, court filing and 30-minute phone consultation for $1,500. There’s a $2,500 premium service that includes filing of court documents, 90 minutes of consultation and document filing with the court.
The site’s costs are significantly less than Wasser's services, which start with a $25,000 retainer and run $850 per hour.
Wasser, 49, who is divorced, said her site could possibly work for some of her clients, joking that those for whom it would probably wouldn't mind seeing and paying her less.
There are other sites with similar services, the Fox Business report said, such as Wevorce, which is affiliated with the online legal resource LegalZoom.
However, those services aren't led by a lawyer like Wasser, who is known for representing Hollywood celebrities, though she does not comment on her clients.
Wasser is doubtful “Its Over Easy” will contribute to divorce being too simple.
“We're not making it too easy,” she said. “Divorce is very difficult, but it is happening. And I hardly think that anybody is going to see … our advertisements and go 'Oh, I hadn't even thought of that. Now I'm going to get divorced.'”
