WASHINGTON, July 24 (LSN) Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 296 to 132 to override President Clinton’s veto of a bill that would ban partial-birth abortions. The question now has to go before the Senate, where a two-thirds majority vote is expected to be more difficult. The May 1997 Senate roll call passing the bill was 64 – 36, three votes short of the necessary two-thirds majority needed to override a Clinton veto. Gary Bauer, head of the Family Research Council, a leading American pro-family group, commended the House for its vote. “I commend the House for calling President Clinton off-sides in his adamant support of partial-birth abortion,” Bauer said. “Now I urge the Senate to blow the whistle and put an end to government-sanctioned infanticide.”“It’s long past time for 36 senators to stop defending the indefensible, brutal practice of partial-birth abortion,” said Douglas Johnson, legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee, after today’s vote. Meanwhile, more than half (28) of the American states have passed legislation against partial-birth abortion. Only 10 of these bans, however, are in effect; the others are tied up in court.
