TORONTO, June 14, 2002 (LSN.ca) – A so-called “church reform group” says World Youth Day organizers are not doing enough to protect youth from predatory clergy travelling to the upcoming event. The group, with an undisclosed number of members, calls itself “Challenge the Church” and supports abortion, contraception, homosexual “rights” and dissent on a range of basic church teachings. World Youth Day spokesman Paul Kilbertus responded “No matter what you do, there are always going to be risks,… we’ve done everything we can . . . to avoid any type of risks, be it physical harm, theft or sexual abuse.”

Kilbertus failed to expose the group’s hypocrisy: in fact, active homosexuals in church institutions, together with a significant number of protectors in the hierarchy, are responsible for creating the sexual abuse scandals. Active homosexual priests are almost always dissidents from Church teaching and tend to be harsh critics of the pope – just like “Challenge the Church”. The group appears to be demanding that the youth be protected from a situation that it has created and is wanting to further legitimize.  For the Toronto Star’s report on the group see: https://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1022100091885&call_page=TS_News&call_pageid=968332188492&call_pagepath=News/News
