CHICAGO, IL – Lawmakers in the state of Illinois have spent more than $1 million in taxpayer funds on condoms and flavored body lubricant.

“If Illinois has any hope of balancing its budget, it has to begin cutting low-priority spending.”

The Illinois Policy Institute, a conservative state think tank, revealed that the state asked for bids to produce 4,453,000 condoms for statewide distribution. Bidding documents specified the “smooth surface” condoms must not only come in “assorted colors” and sizes – including “extra large” – but they must also be a “recognized brand” that has a “strong retail presence.”

They also bid out for 374,000 bottles of lubricant, which must come in “assorted flavors.”

In all, the two state contracts total $1,050,409.77. Although the program expires at the end of 2014, it could be renewed for up to two additional years.

The prophylactics will be available at dozens of condom distribution sites in Chicago alone, including the Christian Community Health Center, the Youth Pride Center, the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, Malcolm X College, and various hair salons, eateries, and bars.

“If Illinois has any hope of balancing its budget, it has to begin cutting low-priority spending,” said Kristina Rasmussen, executive vice president of Illinois Policy. “Is it too much to ask people to purchase their own flavored lubricant? I hope not.”
