TROCHU, Alberta, September 18, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Mel Middleton, Executive Director of Freedom Quest International, an Alberta-based organization, recently wrote to Canadian Senator Doug Roche about international implications of last week’s passage of Bill C-250. The bill added “sexual orientation” to Canada’s hate crimes law.  In urging the senator to not vote in favour of the legislation, Middleton, who has promoted human rights and democracy in some of the world’s most oppressed countries for 25 years, asked, “Why should there be an exemption for ‘sincere religious views’, but not for views based on health, science, or politics?”  Middleton continues that the “vast majority” people of all faiths in the Third World nations he has worked in “have very strong views about sexual morals—including family and marriage” and “react with horror and disbelief at the way the traditional definition of marriage is being trampled in this country”.  Given this reality, he says, “When faced with the choice of risking their cherished and heart felt commitment to the sanctity of marriage, or following political ideologies which are anti-democratic, many, unfortunately, will be compelled to reject democracy based on the example of Canada”.  In fact, Middleton says, “the likes of Osama Bin Laden will be wringing their hands with glee over this new, Canadian provided ‘weapon of mass mobilization’.  The gay marriage issue will certainly help to fill the ranks of Al Qaeda and other like-minded terrorist groups.”  The Executive Director of Freedom Quest International concludes “This Bill (C-250) strongly discriminates against anyone who has non-religious views. It is draconian legislation which is unfit for a civilized nation which prides itself on being free”.  See previous Interim story on Mel Middleton’s work in Africa:  https://www.lifesitenews.com/interim/1999/aug/20unirresp.html   Contact Mel Middleton at [email protected]
