JERUSALEM, Dec 6, 2000 (LSN.ca) – During a heated debate on abortion in the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) yesterday, Health Ministry official Dr. Yoram Lotan revealed abortion statistics for the first seven months of 2000. The Ha’aretz newspaper reports today that from January to July this year, 11,619 abortion requests had been filed, and 11,403 were approved. A similar number of abortions are estimated to have been performed without clearance from the hospital committees.” Meanwhile, the Director of the pro-life group Efrat, Dr. Eli Shosheim, reported to government officials that in 1999, his organization saved 1,018 babies, “which would have ended their lives in garbage bins.”
