Artificial procreation for singles or homosexual couples is disallowed.
ROME, June 19, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The Italian lower Chamber of Deputies passed legislation on artificial procreation today which has some of the world's most life-respecting characteristics. However, the bill, which passed 268-144, is expected to face tough opposition in the Senate.
The legislation bans experimentation on human embryos and also the freezing of embryos as well as cloning. It also respects the rights of children conceived unnaturally via artificial procreation to at least have a father and a mother. Artificial procreation for singles or homosexual couples is therefore disallowed. The creation of artificial embryos is capped at three and each created embryo must be given a chance to be born by implantation. Moreover, donor sperm and eggs are prohibited.
In anticipation of a long political battle over the provisions, the government has extended its current, albeit weak, restrictions on stem cell research until the end of the year.
