TURIN, Italy, September 25, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The abortion pill RU-486 is to begin testing in Italy within weeks. Corriere Della Sera reports that the Sant’Anna hospital in Turin will conduct the experiments. Silvio Viale, gynaecologist at the Piedmont-based institution which carries out the highest number of abortions in the country, said: “There’s no going back”.

The recent death of a Canadian woman during RU-486 trials in Canada has led to a suspension of Canadian trials.

In related news, a US survey has shown that even abortionists are not keen on using the abortion pill. A Kaiser Family Foundation survey has observed that of 595 gynecologists questioned, some of whom already performed surgical abortions, only 6% said they had provided RU-486 (mifepristone) since its approval last September. And for the 195 general practitioners who participated in the survey between mid-May and late August of this year, the figure was 1%.
