OTTAWA, Aug 10, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark urged the Liberal government yesterday to move quickly to criminalize cloning. Such an initiative would be covered by the reproductive technologies bill being considered by Parliament. Mr. Clark, however, proposed a quicker solution for cloning, reported Canadian Press yesterday: “There is a private members bill,” he told a briefing Thursday. “It’s well written, it’s precise. It would allow action very quickly.” He was referring to a Private Members’ Bill introduced by Bloc Quebecois MP Pauline Picard that would ban human cloning. Ms. Picard’s bill would “amend the Criminal Code to prohibit the genetic manipulation of a human cell, a zygote or an embryo with a view to preventing human cloning.”
