(LifeSiteNews) – Vice President Kamala Harris claimed to speak for what legal abortion “means to real people, including children” Monday, in remarks that raised many an eyebrow for their macabre irony.

Speaking to a group of Indiana lawmakers, Harris invoked the case of a 10-year-old girl raped in Ohio and taken to Indiana for an abortion.

“So that is the context in which we meet and fight,” she said. “This has created a healthcare crisis in America. And as has been said, Indiana has already been on the forefront of this very issue, as Representative Pryor described one of the more publicized and well-known cases, in terms of what this issue means to real people, including children.”

“And I am a former prosecutor,” Harris added. “I specialized in crimes against women and children. I specialized in — in child sexual assault cases. The idea that, in some states, after a child or a woman or a man — but in particular, on this case of abortion, a woman or a child — would have endured such an act of violence, and then to suggest that she would not have the autonomy and authority to make a decision about what happens to her body is outrageous.”

The confessed rapist in the case, 27-year-old Gershon Fuentes, turned out to be an illegal immigrant as well as the boyfriend of the victim’s mother, who vouches for his innocence. The revelations raised questions as to the real reasons the girl was taken across state lines for an abortion, as well as the root causes of her victimization, which the mainsteam media has largely ignored in favor of emphasizing the case’s abortion implications. Ohio Attorney General David Yost maintains that the state’s heartbeat law would have given doctors the discretion to decide an abortion was medically necessary due to the girl’s age.

Regardless, the pro-abortion vice president’s remarks frame abortion “access” around the needs of children, despite the fact that every abortion, by design, eliminates a living child because an adult has deemed his or her existence undesirable, a fact Democrat politicians rarely confront, instead preferring to frame the sanctity of life as strictly a theological question (though some far-left activists are more open about the fact that they support “killing”).

Roe v. Wade’s overturn last month sparked the activation of scores of pro-life laws across the country. Abortion giant Planned Parenthood has suspended abortions and/or closed locations in reaction to the ruling, and pro-life attorneys general have declared their intentions to enforce their states’ duly-enacted abortion prohibitions.

But leftists prosecutors in dozens of localities have vowed not to enforce such laws, and abortion allies have turned to supporting interstate travel for abortion to skirt new laws, ensuring that work and debate will continue over the prospect of banning abortion nationally. President Joe Biden has called for electing more Democrats to Congress to support codifying a “right” to abortion-on-demand in federal law.
