IRON BRIDGE, April 15, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Dan Heffernan, a representative of the Ontario State Council of the Knights of Columbus, has asked Catholic MP’s to read and reflect on the Vatican document, “Considerations Regarding Proposals to Give Legal Recognition to Unions Between Homosexual Persons.” The document, that produced much negative comment from the media, outlines the duties of Catholics in public life in countries where homosexual partnerings are being proposed for legal recognition.
Writing on the day of the funeral of Pope John Paul II, Heffernan urged Canadian Catholic politicians to weigh their decisions in light of their Catholic Faith. Heffernan wrote, “It is not true that politicians leave their religion at the door when they enter the House of Commons. To do so is hypocrisy.”
Heffernan quoted one of the document’s key paragraphs, “When legislation in favour of the recognition of homosexual unions is proposed for the first time in a legislative assembly, the Catholic law-maker has a moral duty to express his opposition clearly and publicly and to vote against it. To vote in favour of a law so harmful to the common good is gravely immoral.”
