NEW YORK, April 16, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The New York couple who helped convicted abortionist shooter James Kopp to escape have pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to harbor a known fugitive” when Kopp fled overseas. The charge could carry a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine—but it is not yet clear what terms were agreed to in the plea bargain. Loretta Marra, 39, and Dennis Malvasi, 53, have already spend two years in jail over charges that they sent money to Kopp and communicated with him by e-mail, discussing how he might return to the United States without capture. It was through the couple’s sending a package to Kopp in France that the FBI was able to tip off French police, who in turn arrested Kopp at the post office when he went to pick it up. Kopp himself is to be sentenced in Buffalo on May 9. He faces a maximum of life in prison after admitting to a reporter that he shot Dr. Barnet Slepian sniper-style, allegedly to prevent him from carrying out further abortions. He was convicted of “intentional murder in the second degree” last month.
