SEOUL, May 30, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Korean scientist who boasts being the first to create a cloned human embryo criticised US President George W. Bush Sunday over the president’s policy restricting funding for research that creates embryonic children for use in scientific experiments.

Woo-Suk Hwang, who receives substantial funding for his research from the Korean government, claimed, “With all the great scientists and the great potential of the United States … if because of some policy hurdle, the researchers cannot realise their dreams, I believe, as a fellow scientist this would be very regrettable,” according to a Reuters report.

Hwang believes that embryonic stem cells may provide a solution to the cure of many diseases, despite there being no evidence that embryonic stem cell therapies have had any positive medicinal benefits.

“The research by Professor Hwang’s team is a kind of experimentation on live humans who have no power to protect themselves,” said the Korean Christian Bioethics Association in a statement.

“I’m very concerned about cloning,” Bush said Friday. Bush expressed concern over Hwang’s research. “I worry about a world in which cloning would be acceptable.”
