March 10, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) — Irish pro-life groups have said that the global pro-life community must make the public aware that Amnesty International are now campaigning for abortion. Their call came as Amnesty has ramped up their global support for legalizing abortion, especially targeting countries like Ireland where abortion is either restricted or was, until recently, banned.
Youth Defence said that the initial results of a social media campaign in Ireland informing the public that Amnesty was pro-abortion was “both revealing and interesting”.
Spokeswoman Clare Molloy said that it was obvious that most people were unaware that Amnesty was now strongly calling for abortion, usually because Amnesty spokespersons were careful to couch that support in terms that confused or misled the public.
She said that comments on social media showed that members of the public were shocked to learn that a human rights organization could have lost its way so badly.

“But we were also interested to see that commentators were saying that they would not continue to support Amnesty financially given their support for abortion,” she said. “People of goodwill were upset and angry to learn that an organisation which raises millions to protect human rights would now be focused on destroying the right to life of innocent and defenceless unborn children.”
Niamh Uí Bhriain of the Life Institute said that Amnesty was spending vast amounts of money on promoting abortion at a time when human rights abuses across the world had escalated. “We seem to hear very little from Amnesty Ireland on the disturbing persecution and beheading of Christians and people of other faiths in some jurisdictions. Instead they have become cheerleaders for the dismemberment of unborn children. It’s shameful,” she said.
Amnesty has called for Ireland to legalize abortion on broad grounds including the ‘health of the mother’ grounds which have been widely interpreted in Britain and now lead to some 200,000 abortions every year.
Youth Defence say it hopes to ramp up its campaign to inform the public of Amnesty’s position and of the indefensible stance they have adopted as abortion campaigners.
